Disability Insurance
The Employment Development Department oversees benefit programs, including disability insurance. The program helps people who can’t work due to non-work-related illnesses or injuries, pregnancy, or childbirth and provides short-term wage replacement to eligible Californians.
As mentioned, this program covers pregnancy and childbirth. However, some assume that “disability” is exclusive to medical conditions. For a clear overview, disability is a physical or mental impairment that prevents you from performing your regular or customary work.
Qualifying candidates must file a short-term disability (SDI) claim with the EDD. You must submit your claim no earlier than nine days after your first day of disability begins but no later than 49 days.
Unemployment Insurance
Unemployment insurance is another resource everyone should know about. This insurance program helps working Californians who became unemployed through no fault of their own.
